New Delhi: Google has officially introduced its Wear OS 7, its latest version of smartwatch operating system. This latest version of the OS brings a host of features that are specially designed to make wearables more useful, efficient, and personalized. This upgrade also brings features like Live Updates, dynamic widgets, enhanced media controls, and improved battery life, while it is also laying the groundwork for deeper AI integration via Gemini Intelligence.

They are continuing to invest in the power optimizations so their users can do more with their favorite applications. For watches updating from Wear OS 6 to Wear OS 7, average users can expect up to 10% improvements in battery life. However, with the broader rollout to the Android ecosystem, several selected watches are going arriving later this year will also come with Gemini Intelligence, offering proactive and personalized help to their users so they can focus on what matters most for them.
Live Updates, which now going to replaces the older Ongoing Activities API. This also enables the applications to deliver real-time information directly on the watch face, whether it's tracking food delivery, monitoring a workout, or following live scores. Their aim is to make smartwatches more proactive and glanceable by reducing the need to check devices constantly.
Wear Widgets built on Jetpack Glance and RemoteCompose. These widgets come in 2x1 and 2x2 layouts, mirroring Android’s mobile widget design for consistency. Users can also pin the widgets for quick access to applications like weather, calendar, or fitness by making the watch face more customizable and functional.
Wear OS 7 offers users more control over audio playback. The latest Remote Output Switcher lets users seamlessly change where the audio plays from earbuds to speakers directly from the wrist. Per application auto-unveil settings to ensure that the media controls also appear only when relevant, streamlining the experience. Fitness tracking also gets a boost with the latest Workout Tracker. This is a standardized system that supports heart rate monitoring, workout progress, and integrated media control. Google has also partnered with ASICS Runkeeper to debut the feature later this year, claiming a more unified fitness experience across applications.
Compose for Wear OS 1.6 unveils with the improved navigation, list handling, and ambient mode support. However, Watch Face Format 5 also adds several more advanced customization options like auto-sizing, blend modes, and hierarchical settings, offering designers more creative freedom. Select upcoming devices will feature Gemini Intelligence, Google’s AI assistant. This enables users to issue natural voice commands such as Start tracking my run or Play my workout playlists with applications like Samsung Health by responding instantly. Developers can also leverage AppFunctions to integrate their applications with Gemini for task automation.
