Andhra Pradesh releases new map showing 28 districts, Amaravati as capital

Amaravati, 04 April (HS): Marking key administrative changes, the Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Authority has released a new state map showing 28 districts and clearly marking Amaravati in Guntur district as the state capital.

The development follows the recent passage of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill by both Houses of Parliament, formally recognising Amaravati as the sole capital of the state, more than a decade after the bifurcation of the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh.

The number of districts in the state has increased from 26 to 28 following the creation of two new districts - Polavaram and Markapuram - by the TDP-led government.

According to officials, Polavaram district has been carved out of the Ramachodavaram and Chinturu revenue divisions of Alluri Sitharama Raju district, while Markapuram district has been formed from the Markapuram and Kanigiri revenue divisions of Prakasam district.

The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, had approved the revised district reorganisation map in December 2025 along with several other policy and administrative decisions aimed at improving governance and administrative efficiency.

Officials said the reorganisation is intended to streamline administration and serve as a framework for future planning and development in the state.
