Howrah station will be 'single use plastic free zone' from 2nd October
Kolkata, Sept 11 (HS): Kolkata headquartered Eastern Railway here today announced its decision to convert the entire Howrah Station complex as a single use plastic free zone from 2nd October, the birthday of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.
Announcing this step while participating in a 'Shramadan' programme at Howrah station as part of the union government's 'Swachhata HI Seva' initiative for creating awareness on cleanliness with special emphasis on introducing plastic-free stations in every railway zone, Eastern Railway General Manager P.C. Shama today said no single-use plastic material would be allowed anywhere in Howrah station complex from early next month and a mass awareness campaign would be launched through Posters, Banners, Public Address System at every station and showing of documentary films.
He also appealed to the passengers to use waste bins and bottle crushing machines to help the railway authorities maintain the station as a plastic-free zone.
A number of other senior ER officials also attended the programme while members of the Railway Scouts and Guides staged a Street play to promote the idea of clean and plastic-free railway stations across the country.
