President Approves Appointment of Five New Supreme Court Judges

New Delhi, 01 June (H.S.):

President Droupadi Murmu has approved the appointment of five new judges to the Supreme Court of India.

The newly appointed judges are Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court; Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court; Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court; Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh; and senior advocate V. Mohan, who has been practising before the Supreme Court.

The recommendations for their elevation were made by the Supreme Court Collegium during its meetings held on May 22 and May 27.

With these appointments, the total strength of judges in the Supreme Court will increase from 32 to 37.

Earlier, on May 5, the Union Cabinet approved the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026, which provides for increasing the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges from 33 to 37.

The ordinance will require parliamentary approval within six months in order to remain in force.
