The river Ganga flowing into the terrain is considered as the most polluted part of Kanpur. From this meeting held in Kanpur, the government wants to convey that it is serious about the Namami Gange project. Making the Ganga and its tributaries clean is on the BJP's agenda.

The Namami Gange project was launched by the central government in 2014 to eliminate and revive the pollution of the Ganga and its tributaries. The responsibility is given to the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation. The duration of the project is 18 years. The government has set a budget of Rs 20,000 crore for cleaning of the river by 2019-2020.
