HYDERABAD: Amid growing controversy and a formal summons from the Telangana State Commission for Women (TGSCW), actor Shivaji issued a public apology on Tuesday for remarks made during a movie press meet a day earlier.

His comments, which prescribed modest clothing for actresses and linked attire to respect, sparked widespread outrage and led the Commission to take suo motu cognizance.

Going further into details, at the pre-release event for his film Dhandora on Monday evening, Shivaji gave unsolicited advice to women in the film industry. "If girls and actresses wear whatever clothes they want, we are the ones who will suffer the consequences," he stated. He said a woman's beauty lies "in a saree, in clothes that cover you completely, not in clothes that reveal your body."

He also claimed that when women wear revealing clothes, people think vulgarly. "Our respect increases only through our attire and language," the actor concluded, citing saree-clad Miss Universe winners as examples.

Facing legal action and public backlash, Shivaji released an apology video on Tuesday. He said his intention was to "offer some words of encouragement to the actresses about the difficulties they face," but admitted to using "two unparliamentary words" that hurt feelings.

"I wasn't speaking about all women, but expressing the sentiment that if actresses are careful about their clothing when they go out, they might avoid problems," he explained. He emphasized that his intention was good and that he always considered women to be a great power, like a divine mother.

His apology concluded with, "For hurting the feelings of women in the industry, and if any women have misunderstood this, I offer my sincere apologies to all of you."
