ADILABAD: Residents of a tribal village in Adilabad district are continuing a centuries-old tradition that bans footwear inside the village during the holy Pushya month.
Centuries-old Pushya month custom enforced
The practice is being followed at Tummuguda village in Indervelli mandal. As per the custom, anyone entering the village during the Pushya month must remove footwear at the village boundary. Violators will be fined ₹5,000, village elders said.
Flex boards installed at village entrance
The village committee has put up flex boards announcing the rule. The restriction will remain in force for a month and has become a talking point in surrounding areas.

Alcohol, smoking banned during ritual period
Local tribal communities observe strict customs during the Pushya month. From Tuesday till January 22, villagers perform special prayers and rituals. During this period, they abstain from alcohol and smoking, sleep on the floor, and walk barefoot as part of tradition.
Village elders said outsiders must also follow the rule and leave their footwear at the village limits before entering. They warned that anyone violating the norm would be penalised.
