HYDERABAD: Valerian Grammar School, a century-old institution in Yapral, is facing closure after local military authorities allegedly encroached on its historic football grounds overnight.
The incident has prompted strong reactions from parents, alumni, and residents, with the Federation of North Eastern Colonies of Secunderabad (FNECS) calling for immediate action.
This incident has had far-reaching effects. The school, which has educated generations of students, including former MLA Mynampally Hanumantha Rao, several IAS and IPS officers, and many underprivileged children, now faces an existential threat. FNECS Secretary C.S. Chandrashekar stated that the military used bulldozers to destroy the playground, a key area supporting students' outdoor activities and development.
Describing the destruction, Chandrashekar said, "Armed with bulldozers, they destroyed the entire area overnight. This is not just about losing a field, they are depriving children of their fundamental right to play and to engage in physical activities essential for their growth and well-being."
The impact of the military's actions did not stop at the playground. The situation has escalated because military personnel reportedly prevented the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) from resurfacing the damaged road to the school. Students and staff depend on this road for safe and accessible transportation.
"To suddenly assert ownership over a children's playground is a blatant overreach and cannot be justified under any circumstances," Chandrashekar added. "The military has not only taken away the grounds but is now obstructing basic civic amenities."
For the people of Yapral, Valerian Grammar School is more than a building, it is a beacon of hope and a repository of cherished memories. The school has been a pillar of inclusive education, providing opportunities to underprivileged children for decades.
In response, FNECS launched a public petition urging military authorities to stop further action and to work with civic officials for the community's benefit. The petition demands that authorities immediately restore the football grounds, resume GHMC road repairs, and establish transparent dialogue between military authorities and school management.
Legal experts and child rights advocates note that Article 21 (Right to Life) of the Indian Constitution protects the right to play and recreation. Authorities violate children's developmental rights when they deny access to physical activity spaces, particularly in urban areas like Yapral.
Parents are especially concerned about what the future holds for their children. "This is not a land dispute between two powerful entities. This is about children who have no other open space to run, play football, or grow. The military's action sets a dangerous precedent," said a local parent who requested anonymity.
FNECS has requested that the Ministry of Defence, local military command, and the Telangana government intervene immediately. The organization also asked GHMC to continue road repairs without further delays.
Chandrashekar summed up the community's position by stating, "We are not asking for anything unreasonable. We are asking for our children's future to be protected," Chandrashekar stated. "The school has served this community for over 100 years. It cannot be destroyed overnight by bulldozers and barbed wire."
Finally, the community started an online petition to gather public support. Citizens can sign and help advocate for the preservation of Valerian Grammar School and its football grounds.
