BJP leader Ramchander Rao alleges Congress opposed women's reservation, terms move anti-women

HYDERABAD: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader N Ramchander Rao on Friday accused the Congress of opposing women's reservation, alleging that the party had "once again defeated the aspirations of women" in Parliament.

Rao said the Congress had supported the proposal for 33% reservation for women in 2023 but had now voted against it. He termed the move "irresponsible" and said it exposed the party as "anti-women".

Congress accused of reversing stand on women's quota

"The Congress party, founded during the British era and run by an Italian, remains trapped in a culture of subservience where one family dominates its politics," Rao said. He added that the party's conduct in Parliament showed a lack of commitment to women's empowerment.

He alleged that the Congress leadership, including Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, reflected a "feudal mindset" that limited opportunities for women outside the Gandhi family.

Claims party promotes dynastic politics over grassroots women leaders

Rao said the Congress leadership appeared to favour women from the Gandhi family while "ordinary women with merit and public support are denied space to rise".

He named Sonia Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi as examples, alleging that the party accepted only such leadership while excluding women from modest backgrounds.

"Their politics is driven by vote-bank calculations and the interests of one family, not principles," he said.

Protest attempt leads to house arrest allegation in Telangana

Rao also criticised the Congress-led Telangana government, alleging suppression of democratic protest. He said party workers and women supporters had attempted to protest near the Chief Minister's residence but were prevented.

"Instead of allowing democratic protest, I have been placed under house arrest," Rao said, adding that the move reflected an "authoritarian mindset".

He further alleged that the Congress had historically delayed or diluted women's reservation and was now repeating the pattern. Rao said attempts to raise issues such as a "North-South divide" were meant to distract from the core issue.

Calling the development a "grave injustice", Rao said women across the state would not forgive the Congress for what he termed a betrayal.
