Blacklist threat looms over Kaleshwaram barrage contractors

HyderabadMail.com 6 months ago

HYDERABAD: The Telangana irrigation department has warned two more contractors of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) that they could face blacklisting if they fail to repair the barrages they built at their own cost.

After issuing a similar warning to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) over the Medigadda barrage, the department has now written to Navayuga Engineering Company Ltd. and Afcons Vijetha PES-JV, builders of the Sundilla and Annaram barrages, asking them to comply with repair directives.

Sources said the government had instructed officials to ensure that all contractors bear the full cost of repairs. "Action is being taken uniformly against all three companies," an official said.

Both Navayuga and Afcons have been given a week to respond. The department's letters also warned that failure to act could lead to blacklisting and recovery of damages under the Revenue Recovery Act, as well as forfeiture of deposits and pending payments.

While the completion certificates for Sundilla and Annaram barrages have not been cancelled unlike L&T's Medigadda certificate the two companies remain liable for rectifying issues that emerged during the two-year defect liability period.

Officials said the damages at Sundilla and Annaram were less severe than those at Medigadda. However, both Navayuga and Afcons have previously told the department that the defects were due to design flaws for which they were not responsible similar to L&T's stance.
