HYDERABAD: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court against the Telangana Legislative Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar, alleging deliberate delay in deciding the disqualification pleas pending against defected legislators.
Appearing before the Chief Justice's Bench, BRS counsel urged the court to take up the matter urgently. The petition said the Speaker had not delivered a decision on the disqualification petitions, allowing the defected legislators to continue as MLAs.

The lawyers told the Bench that despite earlier directions from the Supreme Court to conclude such proceedings within a reasonable time, the hearings were still at the evidence stage. They alleged that the process was being prolonged until Chief Justice B R Gavai's retirement.
Hearing the submissions, CJI Gavai observed that the Supreme Court's work would not end with his retirement and assured the petitioners that the case would be heard next Monday.
