Former AP DGP H.J. Dora Passes Away at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences

HYDERABAD: Former Director General of Police (DGP) of undivided Andhra Pradesh, H.J. Dora, passed away on Friday morning at the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences ( NIMS).

He was 83.

A 1965-batch senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Dora had been receiving regular dialysis for kidney-related ailments. His condition worsened on Friday, and despite medical efforts in the Acute Respiratory Care Unit, he succumbed to his illness.

Dora served as DGP of Andhra Pradesh from November 1996 to 2002. His tenure was noted for strategic measures against Left-Wing Extremism during a period of heightened unrest in the State. He also served as Director General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and as Vigilance Commissioner at the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).

Apart from his police career, Dora was an accomplished author. His autobiography, Journey Through Turbulent Times, detailed his professional experiences, while his Telugu book, NTR Tho Nenu (Me with NTR), offered insights into state administration.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner ,

expressed deep grief over Dora's demise, calling him one of the finest IPS officers whose leadership left a lasting impact on policing. Sajjanar recalled that Dora took charge during peak Naxal violence and stabilised the force after the Sirpur-Utnur police station attack, which killed 16 policemen. He added that Dora was his first police superior and conveyed condolences to the bereaved family.
