GHMC launches citywide drive to clear footpath encroachments in Hyderabad

HyderabadMail.com 1 month ago

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has begun a large-scale crackdown on footpath encroachments across all six zones of the city, aiming to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility.

Authorities deployed heavy machinery, including JCBs, to demolish permanent, temporary and illegal structures occupying footpaths. The drive targets hundreds of such encroachments identified along key stretches.

Encroachments cleared near hospitals, markets and junctions

Officials said the operation is focused on main roads and high-footfall areas. These include footpaths near Gandhi Hospital, Maheshwari Parmeshwari Theatre, Sultan Bazar Road and Kacheguda Junction.

The civic body has also scheduled special enforcement drives every Saturday to sustain the clearance effort and prevent re-encroachments.

Civic body cites safety concerns for pedestrians

GHMC authorities said the initiative is part of ongoing measures to ensure safer and obstruction-free movement for pedestrians in the city. Encroachments on footpaths have long been cited as a major concern, forcing pedestrians onto roads and increasing accident risks.
