HYDERABAD: Hyderabad's two-wheeler population has surged past 65 lakh, almost matching the city's estimated population of 60-70 lakh.
In many households, the number of bikes now equals the number of family members. Scooters have become common among women commuters.
Loans fuel personal vehicle boom
Low down payments and easy bank loans are driving purchases. Showrooms are also offering personal finance options, encouraging more buyers.
As per official figures dated February 4, 2026, there are 65,51,563 motorbikes registered in the city. Cars number 16,37,531. The total number of vehicles stands at 88,97,109.
In the core urban region, with a population of 1.34 crore, vehicle registrations have reached 88 lakh. If vehicles commuting daily from neighbouring districts are included, the number crosses one crore.
Public transport struggles to offset growth
Daily ridership figures show Metro services carry about 5 lakh passengers, Telangana State Road Transport Corporation buses about 30 lakh, and MMTS around 60,000.
Rising private vehicle ownership has worsened traffic congestion. The IT corridor, Secunderabad and LB Nagar are witnessing increasing gridlocks.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority has turned its focus to easing traffic. The Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority is preparing an action plan to integrate Metro, MMTS and RTC services for seamless connectivity.
