Hyderabad faces water risk as Singur reservoir dips

HyderabadMail.com 2 weeks ago

HYDERABAD: The Singur reservoir, a key source of drinking water for the city, is nearing depletion as water levels continue to fall. With no inflows from upstream and rising summer heat, the storage is approaching dead storage levels.

Authorities said the situation could affect water supply if not managed in time. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is preparing advance measures to avoid disruption. Although the current level is about 12.62 feet above dead storage, rapid evaporation and daily supply are causing a steady decline.

Gravity-based water supply is no longer feasible under current conditions. Officials plan to begin pumping water using emergency motors by the end of April.

Only one-fourth storage available

At present, only about one-fourth of the reservoir's total capacity is available. The full reservoir level stands at 1,717 feet, while the current level has dropped to around 1,695.620 feet.

Water below 1,683 feet is classified as dead storage. The water board usually initiates emergency pumping when levels fall between 1,690 and 1,694 feet. Officials now intend to start pumping earlier to prevent further decline.
