Hyderabad lags as Telangana voter mapping nears 51%

HYDERABAD: Voter mapping under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) ahead of the upcoming electoral roll revision has failed to gather momentum in urban and semi-urban districts of Telangana, even as the state records overall progress of about 51.30%, officials said.

Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Rangareddy, Sangareddy and Warangal districts continue to lag behind, with survey completion in Hyderabad and Medchal-Malkajgiri remaining below 30%. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in these districts said voter details were unavailable in several cases, particularly in densely populated urban areas.

Urban districts trail, rural areas show steady progress

In contrast, Rajanna Sircilla district has emerged as the best performer, completing 80.11% of voter mapping the highest in the state. Siddipet (79.09%), Yadadri Bhuvanagiri (74.73%), Nalgonda (74.06%) and Mahabubabad (72.47%) have also crossed the 70% mark.

At the lower end, Hyderabad stands at 25.99%, followed by Medchal-Malkajgiri (27.12%), Rangareddy (40.02%), Sangareddy (43.34%) and Warangal (44.43%), according to official data.

Two-track mapping process under way

BLOs are following a two-method approach for voter mapping. In the first method, voter data from the 2002 electoral rolls is being linked with the 2025 rolls, with names of deceased voters being removed. This method has achieved 55.61% completion so far.

Under the second method, details of the children of voters listed in 2002 are collected and mapped with the current rolls, wherever applicable. This process has reached 46.76% completion.

Combined, officials have completed mapping for 1,74,10,386 voters out of a total 3,39,36,771 voters across the state.

Officials said urban migration has emerged as a major hurdle. In many city areas, voters listed in earlier rolls are no longer traceable at their recorded addresses. In several cases, BLOs are relying on local residents, colony elders and community representatives to verify voter details due to lack of address clarity.

Although election officials aim to complete the mapping by the end of this month, delays in several districts could push timelines. With the Election Commission of India likely to conduct the SIR exercise in March, officials are under pressure to expedite the remaining work.
