HYDERABAD: Hyderabad police on Sunday issued a clarification dismissing viral social media claims of discounts or waivers on pending traffic challans during the March 14 Lok Adalat.
Several videos circulating on social media platforms have claimed that motorists can clear traffic fines at reduced rates as part of the Lok Adalat proceedings. The videos have garnered lakhs of views and shares.
Police said the claims are false and misleading.
"No official announcement has been made by the police department regarding any concessions on traffic challans," said V C Sajjanar.
No official notification issued
Officials said any decision on traffic fine concessions would be announced only through official channels, including the Hyderabad City Police website and verified social media handles. No such notification has been issued so far.
Police urged citizens to verify information before acting on it. They said spreading unverified claims creates confusion among the public and increases footfall at traffic police offices unnecessarily.
Warning against social media misuse
Sajjanar said some individuals are creating and circulating false content to gain views and followers. "Strict legal action will be taken against those who create and circulate fake news to mislead the public," he added.
Police advised motorists to rely only on official updates and not to share or forward unverified videos.
