HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is preparing to introduce a prepaid system for booking drinking water tankers in the city, aimed at easing booking delays and delivery issues.
Prepaid booking and payments
Under the proposed system, consumers will have to make full payment online at the time of booking. Payments can be made through net banking, Unified Payments Interface platforms such as Google Pay and PhonePe, or debit and credit cards. Cash payments after delivery will not be permitted.

Users will be required to register on the app using their mobile number and can number. They can then select the required tanker capacity, such as 5,000 litres, and complete the booking through the app.
Live tracking and transparency
The water board plans to launch a dedicated mobile application, similar to private food delivery platforms, to improve transparency in tanker supply. Once a booking is confirmed, users will be able to see details such as the allocated tanker number, driver's name and contact number, and the estimated delivery time.
The app will also allow live tracking of the tanker from the filling station to the delivery location using map-based tracking.
OTP-based delivery confirmation
To prevent diversion of water, the system will include an OTP-based verification process. After the tanker reaches the destination and unloads water, the consumer must share a one-time password received on their phone with the driver. The booking will be closed in the system only after OTP verification.
According to officials, this mechanism will ensure that water is delivered only to the intended consumer and that diversion en route is avoided.
The water board is working on developing the application and plans to make it available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store ahead of the summer season.
