HYDERABAD: Once known for migratory birds and a calm setting, Pragathi Nagar (Amberpet) Lake had turned into a foul-smelling dumping ground due to unchecked waste disposal, erasing its ecological and recreational value.

The

has now stepped in to restore the lake. Officials on Monday began clearing accumulated waste along the lake bund. Around 30 truckloads of garbage have already been removed, with another 30 truckloads estimated to be cleared over the next one or two days.

HYDRAA has decided to clear waste on both sides of the road passing through the lake area connecting Kukatpally and Pragathi Nagar. Officials said fencing will be installed after the clean-up to prevent future dumping.

The lake, spread over about 169 acres, had once provided a clean environment to surrounding neighbourhoods. Disturbed by its present condition, local residents raised concerns and sought intervention.

Members of For A Better Society, along with residents, approached A V Ranganath, seeking protection of the lake from encroachments and pollution. Responding to the appeal, HYDRAA, which has already begun lake development works across the city, took up restoration of Pragathi Nagar Lake.

Authorities have also stepped up surveillance to prevent disposal of non-vegetarian waste into the lake. Four vehicles were seized and cases booked for illegal dumping.

Residents and volunteers joined hands with HYDRAA during Monday's clean-up drive. Locals expressed hope that the area would soon regain a clean and healthy environment.
