Officials found the structure at risk of collapse after a nearby under-construction building collapsed on Saturday.

The Saturday collapse killed two workers and damaged several neighbouring buildings. The impact also severely damaged the seven-storey building that HYDRAA and CMC are now removing.

CMC flags building violations

CMC officials said the building lacked the required permissions and posed a threat to nearby structures. The civic body lodged a complaint with HYDRAA, prompting the joint demolition operation.

Officials are taking extra care because the building stands very close to other structures. HYDRAA is using a heavy excavator to remove the building in stages and limit the risk to neighbouring properties.

Police have deployed personnel at the site and restricted public movement around the demolition zone.

Authorities also evacuated residents of Sterling Whitefield Apartments as a precaution. Officials feared the demolition could cause further damage to nearby buildings.

Nearby buildings inspected

The Saturday collapse damaged parts of Jaya Darshini Apartments, including its C Block. Officials inspected buildings in the surrounding area after the incident to assess their safety.

Focus on unauthorised constructions

The incident has also put unauthorised multi-storey buildings in Anjaiah Nagar under the scanner. HYDRAA Commissioner A V Ranganath said the agency would survey illegal structures in the locality and take action against confirmed violations.

Officials said the collapsed building stood on a 50-square-yard plot and violated building rules. CMC has also ordered inspections of unauthorised constructions within its jurisdiction.

Sunday's demolition forms part of the joint enforcement drive by HYDRAA and CMC to remove unsafe and unauthorised structures in the area.
