The issue dominated an all-party meeting organised by the newly formed Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) at a private hotel in Nagole on Thursday. The meeting was chaired by MMC Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy to discuss civic works, local issues and future plans after the corporation's formation on February 11 following the merger of suburban municipalities and corporations.

Leaders demand decentralised waste management

The leaders urged officials to establish waste management centres in different parts of the city instead of relying solely on the Jawaharnagar dumping yard. The commissioner told the meeting that land parcels had already been identified for new waste processing centres and assured leaders that the Jawaharnagar issue would be resolved soon.

Malkajgiri MP Eatala Rajender criticised waste management firm Ramky and alleged negligence in handling the dumping yard. He said nearby villages were suffering from pollution and claimed the company's figures did not match the ground reality faced by residents.

Government Chief Whip Patnam Mahender Reddy said he would bring the concerns of villages surrounding the dumping yard to the attention of Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and work towards resolving the issue.

MLAs flag flooding, pollution and health concerns

Medchal MLA Mallareddy said the situation had worsened despite earlier efforts to address the issue when the current chief minister served as Malkajgiri MP.

Maheshwaram MLA Sabitha Indra Reddy raised concerns over flooding in Maheshwaram and LB Nagar constituencies during the monsoon. She urged officials to clean stormwater drains, construct new drains and increase the number of waste management centres.

Malkajgiri MLA Marri Rajasekhar Reddy said Bandacheruvu had become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and alleged that desilting works in drains were not being carried out.

Uppal MLA Laxma Reddy said polluted water flowing out of the dumping yard was affecting lakes downstream and killing fish. He added that foul smell from the yard was spreading up to Sainikpuri, Thumkunta and Alwal.

LB Nagar MLA Sudheer Reddy alleged that groundwater pollution was leading to miscarriages among some women. He also demanded faster completion of Strategic Nala Development Programme works ahead of the monsoon and flagged the increasing stray dog menace.

Medchal District Congress Committee president Vajresh Yadav said several residents near the Jawaharnagar dumping yard had fallen ill while Ramky continued to earn crores of rupees.

Team to inspect dumping yard

Following demands from public representatives, the MMC commissioner decided to conduct an inspection of the Jawaharnagar dumping yard on Friday. Leaders from all parties will examine whether waste management operations are being carried out as per the agreement.

Zonal commissioners, department heads and representatives of various political parties attended the meeting.
