HYDERABAD: Telangana Jagruthi president K Kavitha was arrested by Khammam police on Tuesday, March 10, after she launched a hunger strike demanding justice for families evicted from Vinobha Navodaya Bhoodan Colony at Velugumatla on the outskirts of Khammam city.

Kavitha began the hunger strike at Ambedkar Bhavan on Monday night, March 9. The protest aimed to highlight the eviction of residents from the colony and demand rehabilitation.

Around 600 personnel of the Khammam police reached Ambedkar Bhavan at about 06.00 IST on Tuesday and detained Kavitha. She was taken away from the protest site in the presence of the Khammam city Police Commissioner.

The police action effectively ended the hunger strike at the venue.

Kavitha vows to continue protest after arrest

Following her detention, Kavitha said she would continue the hunger strike despite the arrest. She reiterated that houses must be reconstructed in Vinobha Navodaya Colony at Velugumatla and the evicted families should be allowed to return.

The protest centres on demands for rehabilitation and restoration of housing for residents who were displaced from the colony.
