NAPM condemns Christmas attacks, seeks action to protect minorities

Telangana: The National Alliance of People's Movements (NAPM) and Sadbhav Manch have strongly condemned a series of attacks and incidents of intimidation allegedly carried out by right-wing groups during the recent Christmas celebrations across several states.

In a statement issued on January 4, the organisations said the incidents reflected a "rising pattern of hate-filled violence" against religious minorities, particularly Christians and Muslims, and accused authorities of failing to uphold constitutional protections.

Attacks reported across states during December

According to the statement, multiple incidents were reported in December 2025, when right-wing groups allegedly disrupted carol singing and church services in different parts of the country. The groups claimed that street vendors selling Santa Claus caps were assaulted and shopkeepers were pressured to boycott Christian festivities.

"These incidents amount to direct violations of Articles 14, 15, 19, 21 and 25 to 28 of the Constitution of India," the statement said, alleging that some actions received "direct or indirect official patronage".

Criticism of optics versus ground action

NAPM and Sadbhav Manch also criticised what they described as a gap between symbolism and action by the political leadership. They pointed out that while the Prime Minister and the Vice President participated in Christmas events publicly, there was "little firm action" against those accused of violence and intimidation.

The organisations alleged that the narrative of "forced or involuntary conversion" was being used to target minorities, leading to misuse of anti-conversion laws, arbitrary arrests, denial of permissions and disruption of religious practices.

They said this reflected a "systemic breakdown of constitutional governance" under the Modi government and warned that continued inaction by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs was emboldening fringe groups.

Six-point charter of demands

The statement urged the Union Home Minister to issue immediate directions to states and Union Territories to prevent violence and ensure accountability. The demands included strict action against hate speech and crimes, protection for churches, mosques and community celebrations, compensation for victims, and fixing responsibility of police and district administrations for failures.

It also called for a comprehensive review of anti-conversion laws from a constitutional perspective and said arrests should not be made without evidence and judicial scrutiny.

"The secular fabric of the country is at risk," the organisations said, alleging that incidents of violence were higher in states ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Reaffirming solidarity with victims, NAPM and Sadbhav Manch said they would continue to pursue democratic and legal remedies "until justice is ensured and the rule of law is restored".
