HYDERABAD: A 23-year-old man suffering from severe leg pain and progressive weakness due to a spinal tumour recovered successfully after doctors at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences performed an advanced minimally invasive spine surgery.
After a detailed evaluation, doctors identified the tumour in a critical part of the spine. They then performed a biportal endoscopic surgery under the Aarogyasri scheme with additional support from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund (CMRF).
Hospital authorities said private hospitals usually charge around ₹5 lakh for the procedure. However, NIMS provided the treatment free of cost.

Doctors used a biportal endoscopic spinal system donated by BHEL-GE with support from the Rotary Club. As a result, the patient experienced immediate improvement after surgery.
Doctors said the patient reported major relief from pain and regained limb strength. He is now ready for discharge.
Dr Yerragunta Thirumal led the surgical team along with Dr Murali Krishna and Dr Uma Maheshwar.
Meanwhile, doctors said the advanced endoscopic system has helped NIMS provide complex spinal procedures free of cost to underprivileged patients.
They added that the hospital now treats a wide range of spinal conditions through minimally invasive endoscopic techniques. These include disc prolapse surgeries as well as complex cervical and dorsal spine procedures.
Dr Thirumal also thanked Telangana Health Minister Damodara Raja Narasimha,
