HYDERABAD: Nine individuals were booked for illegally obtaining sewer connections in operations and maintenance division No. 4 (Red Hills), the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) said on Thursday, December 18.
Illegal connections found during road works
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) had recently taken up road construction works in Sitaram Bagh. Taking advantage of the excavation, households in the area added 15 illegal sewer connections without obtaining permission from the authorities.
After the violations came to light, HMWSSB officials removed the unauthorised connections and registered criminal cases against nine persons. The water board urged citizens to report any illegal sewer connections to its vigilance wing at 9989998100 or 9989987135.

Case booked for attempted sewage dumping in Osman Sagar
On the same day, HMWSSB officials stopped a septic tanker from dumping sewage into Osman Sagar and booked those responsible at the Moinabad police station.
Officials said the tanker was illegally using the HMWSSB logo to mislead the public and evade inspections. The vehicle was seized and no sewage was discharged into the reservoir.
Managing director Ashok Reddy said sewage from surrounding areas occasionally mixes with the twin reservoirs, but sewage treatment plants are being constructed to address the issue. He added that water from Osman Sagar would be diverted to the Asif Nagar and Miralam water treatment plants, where quality checks would be conducted every hour.
Triple chlorination to ensure safe supply
Assuring residents on water quality, Reddy said the board follows a triple chlorination process - at water treatment plants, main balancing reservoirs and service reservoirs.
He said the supply is monitored to ensure chlorine levels of exactly 0.5 parts per million, adding that all precautions are being taken to provide clean drinking water to the city.
