HYDERABAD: Waiting for a train may soon double up as work time at Secunderabad railway station. As part of its ongoing modernisation, the station is being equipped with digital lounges and co-working spaces that allow passengers to work in an office-like environment while waiting for their trains.

The facilities are designed to bring technology and comfort under one roof, offering high-speed WiFi, charging points and air-conditioned silent work pods. Video conferencing, printing and scanning services will also be available, along with work desks, ergonomic chairs, tea and coffee counters, modern toilets and washrooms. Food and snack options are planned within the facility.

Making waiting time productive

The redevelopment of the station, estimated at around ₹750 crore, is over 60% complete. Along with improved passenger amenities, the focus is on helping travellers make productive use of waiting time or layovers between connecting trains. The digital lounges are expected to benefit IT professionals, businesspersons and students.

Railway officials said similar facilities are already operational at Mumbai Central railway station. There, the digital lounge operates daily from 7 am to 11 pm, with users charged ₹200 for the first hour and ₹150 for each additional hour.

Charges to be decided

At Secunderabad, usage charges are likely to be finalised based on the facilities provided. Officials said the project may be implemented under the public-private partnership model, which is also expected to generate additional revenue for the railways.
