HYDERABAD: For more than two weeks, residents of Vinayak Nagar in Shaikpet have struggled with a persistent drinking water pipeline leak.
Large volumes of potable water are being wasted continuously, mixing with solid waste and untreated sewage in the locality. Social activist Maryala Ajay Kumar raised the issue.
Speaking to HyderabadMail, Ajay Kumar said he first noticed the drinking water overflow at the site about two weeks ago and has since reported the issue to local authorities, seeking urgent resolution. According to him, "This leakage is mixing with solid waste and open drains carrying untreated sewage." He stressed the need for immediate action to prevent contamination of the water supply.
Following his complaint, a representative from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) acknowledged the leakage. The official said repairs would be undertaken but could be delayed, as HMWSSB technical staff need to be deployed to the site.
Meanwhile, Ajay Kumar suspects that the delay is due to administrative and contractor-related issues within HMWSSB. Maintenance contractors, who are responsible for tasks such as repairing water pipelines and replacing manhole covers and sewer covers, operate under Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC). Each contractor has a fixed monthly work quota for their assigned division.
He further explained that contractors initiate new repairs only after previous bills are cleared. If payments are delayed, new maintenance work cannot proceed. "If those are pending, they won't install new ones," he said. Contractors also cannot exceed their monthly quota without additional authorization from HMWSSB.
As a result, he said, only emergency cases tend to receive prompt attention, while other pending repair and replacement work, including cases like the Vinayak Nagar leakage, is often left unaddressed for extended periods.
With the drinking water pipeline leak continuing for over two weeks and potable water still mixing with sewage and solid waste, residents and Ajay Kumar are waiting for HMWSSB and local ward authorities to deploy technical teams and resolve the issue.
