Technicians give wrong blood group at Warangal MGM

WARANGAL: A patient at MGM Hospital in Warangal was transfused with the wrong blood group due to a lapse in testing.

According to her husband Raju, Jyothi, 34, a resident of Ayodhyapuram in Kazipet mandal of Hanamkonda district, was admitted to the hospital on September 16 with fever and respiratory problems.

Doctors found she had severe anaemia and advised transfusion.

On September 17, her blood sample was sent to the blood bank, where technicians reported it as B positive. Based on this, junior doctors arranged blood and transfused it. Another unit was given on September 18.

Jyothi reportedly told staff that her group was O positive, but her concern was ignored. She soon developed abdominal pain and diarrhoea. When another unit was required on Saturday, staff sent a fresh sample for cross-verification. This time, technicians confirmed she was O positive.

Doctors then initiated corrective measures. Medical experts said transfusing the wrong group could cause complications ranging from rashes and bleeding to delayed reactions even after three months.

MGM superintendent Dr Kishore Kumar said, "An inquiry is underway. A committee of doctors from pathology, general medicine and the blood bank has been formed. The patient's condition is stable."
