HYDERABAD: With two Rajya Sabha seats from Telangana falling vacant in April, senior leaders of the Congress have stepped up lobbying to secure nominations.
The terms of Congress national leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi and former Telangana Assembly Speaker Suresh Reddy are set to end next month. Both seats are expected to remain with the Congress, given the party's strength in the Assembly.
Telangana currently has six Rajya Sabha members, including four from the Congress and two from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). With no by-elections arising from Lok Sabha vacancies, the Congress is confident of comfortably retaining both seats, which would further consolidate its numbers in the Upper House from the state.

Party circles say the Congress leadership is inclined to renew Abhishek Manu Singhvi's term. A senior advocate, Singhvi has been advising the state government on several legal matters and is seen as a valuable asset in Parliament.
The contest is intensifying for the second seat. Several senior leaders are in the fray, including Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's close associate Vem Narender Reddy, and K. Kesava Rao, who had earlier represented the BRS before joining the Congress.
Former minister Jana Reddy is also said to be keen on the seat. Party insiders note that the high command may weigh factors such as regional balance, seniority and social representation before taking a call.
Among other aspirants are former MP Madhu Yashki, known to be close to Rahul Gandhi, and Former MP Chedeela Sharada, whose term as chairperson of the Telangana State Women's Commission is set to end shortly, is making efforts to secure the seat. Minority and Brahmin quota considerations are also being discussed within the party.
Election notification for the two Rajya Sabha seats is expected in the first week of March.
