HYDERABAD: Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar on Friday called for a paradigm shift in tackling cybercrime and financial fraud, urging the Reserve Bank of India to take stronger measures against mule accounts.

During a courtesy meeting with the RBI Governor and Deputy Governor Swaminathan at the RBI Hyderabad regional office on December 19, 2025, Sajjanar highlighted the central bank's role in safeguarding the savings of ordinary citizens.

Banks urged to deploy mule hunter tools

Describing mule accounts as the "oxygen" sustaining cybercriminals, the police commissioner pressed for the implementation of mule hunter tools across banks. He explained that fraudsters lure students and daily wage labourers with commissions ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 to open bank accounts.

"Funds siphoned off from victims are diverted through these accounts within minutes," Sajjanar said.

He proposed the creation of a dedicated centralised database to identify and track mule accounts and called for stricter enforcement of Know Your Customer norms and stronger due diligence by banks.

RBI assures further strengthening of systems

Flagging delays in cybercrime investigations, Sajjanar also sought faster sharing of technical evidence by banks, including standardised bank account statements with complete details, and closer coordination with central agencies.

The RBI Governor said both the central bank and banks had taken several steps to curb digital fraud and would continue to strengthen the payment ecosystem. He assured that suitable measures would be taken to address the issues raised.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes) M Srinivasulu, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Crime Station) Shweta and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crimes) Aravind Babu were part of the delegation.
