Wisk to showcase electric air taxi at Wings India

HyderabadMail.com 8 months ago

HYDERABAD: US-based Wisk Aero has taken a key step in developing its first fully autonomous electric air taxi, capable of operating without a pilot.

The aircraft is designed to reduce urban traffic congestion and improve connectivity to rural areas.

The company said the air taxi operates entirely on autonomous technology and will be a key attraction at Wings India 2026.

Electronic vision enables safe landings

Advanced sensors fitted on the aircraft can detect other airborne vehicles. An 'electronic vision' system enables it to assess surroundings much like a human pilot, including identifying the ground during landing to ensure safety.

The system can take decisions without human intervention even in emergency situations. This autonomous capability allows multiple aircraft to operate simultaneously in the same airspace, enabling higher flight density.

15-minute turnaround planned

Wisk aims to achieve a turnaround time of just 15 minutes after each flight, enabling quick redeployment. The fully electric air taxi is also being supported by fast-charging technology under development by the company.

According to Wisk, the aircraft can help reduce road traffic between cities while also enabling faster access to hospitals, educational institutions and delivery of medical supplies to rural areas.

US launch first, India later

"By the end of this decade, we plan to complete certification in the US and launch services there first. We will then expand to other markets such as India," said Philip Swinsburg, director for Asia-Pacific operations and business development at Wisk.

"India's infrastructure is impressive, from air-conditioning systems to manufacturing standards, all of which are at a global level. Some of the products we saw here are worth recommending to our US teams," he added.
