Brasília, Brazil | IBG NEWS Desk

India reinforced its growing influence in global pharmaceutical quality standards as a delegation from the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) participated in the 16th International Meeting of World Pharmacopoeias (IMWP) and the accompanying Stakeholders' Meeting held in Brasília, Brazil, from June 15 to 17, 2026.

The Indian delegation, representing the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, was led by Dr. V. Kalaiselvan, Secretary-cum-Scientific Director of IPC, along with Dr. Pawan Saini and Dr. Shruti Rastogi. The meeting was coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and brought together representatives from leading pharmacopoeias across the world, including those from Europe, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Brazil, South Korea, Russia, Mexico, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and WHO's International Pharmacopoeia.

During the global gathering, Dr. Kalaiselvan presented significant developments in the Indian Pharmacopoeia, highlighting modernization initiatives, advancements in pharmacopoeial standards, and India's contributions toward the harmonization of medicine quality standards worldwide.

Discussions at the forum reaffirmed that the standards established by the Indian Pharmacopoeia are comparable to those maintained by the world's leading pharmacopoeias. This recognition further strengthens India's position as a major contributor to global pharmaceutical regulation and quality assurance.

India received special recognition for its leadership in developing and establishing quality standards for a range of critical medicines and healthcare products. These include anti-tuberculosis drugs, anti-cancer therapeutics, medicines used in the treatment of anaemia, blood and blood products, and other complex pharmaceutical formulations.

The acknowledgment reflects India's expanding scientific expertise, regulatory capabilities, and commitment to ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of medicines used both domestically and internationally.

The Indian delegation actively participated in deliberations on several key issues shaping the future of pharmaceutical standards. These included modern microbiological testing methods, pharmacopoeial convergence, regulatory harmonization, and environmental sustainability within pharmaceutical manufacturing and quality control systems.

At the Stakeholders' Meeting, India highlighted the role of science-based standards in strengthening public health systems and emphasized the importance of international collaboration in ensuring access to safe and effective medicines worldwide.

India's participation at the 16th IMWP further strengthened collaboration with international pharmacopoeial organizations and reinforced the country's growing leadership role in shaping global pharmaceutical quality standards.

Experts noted that as India continues to emerge as a major pharmaceutical manufacturing hub and supplier of affordable medicines to countries around the world, its contribution to developing internationally accepted quality benchmarks is becoming increasingly significant.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment among participating nations to deepen cooperation, promote harmonized standards, and enhance the quality, safety, and effectiveness of medicines for patients across the globe.
