New Delhi, May 14, 2026:

In a significant diplomatic engagement reflecting the enduring strategic partnership between India and Russia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thursday.

During the meeting, Foreign Minister Lavrov briefed Prime Minister Modi on the progress achieved in bilateral cooperation following the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit held in December 2025, where Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin had held extensive discussions on strategic, economic, energy, and geopolitical cooperation.

According to official sources, the two leaders reviewed multiple dimensions of the India-Russia partnership, including ongoing collaboration in trade, energy, defence, connectivity, and global diplomacy. The discussions also covered a range of regional and international developments of mutual concern, particularly the evolving situation in Ukraine and the broader geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Prime Minister Modi reiterated India's long-standing position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the most effective path toward resolving international conflicts and maintaining global stability. India has consistently advocated peaceful negotiations and diplomatic engagement amid ongoing global tensions.

The meeting highlighted the continuing importance of the India-Russia strategic relationship at a time of significant shifts in global geopolitics and emerging multipolar alignments. Analysts believe New Delhi continues to maintain a balanced diplomatic approach by strengthening strategic autonomy while engaging with major global powers across multiple fronts.

Prime Minister Modi also conveyed his warm greetings and best wishes to President Vladimir Putin through Foreign Minister Lavrov, reaffirming the close diplomatic understanding between the two nations.

India and Russia share decades of cooperation across defence, energy, nuclear technology, space research, and multilateral platforms including BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Recent years have also witnessed expanding discussions on trade settlements, connectivity corridors, and long-term energy partnerships.

The high-level interaction comes amid increasing global focus on Eurasian geopolitics, energy security, and the future of diplomatic engagement in conflict zones.
