Sunscreen Check: Dermats Explain Why SPF Is Finally Having Its Biggest Beauty Moment

Sunscreen Check: Dermats Explain Why SPF Is Finally Having Its Biggest Beauty Moment

iDiva 1 week ago

We've all come a long way from carrying sunscreen for just beach vacations or days where the sun seemed to be rather aggressive, and our mothers went 'apply sunscreen before going out'.

Over the years, sunscreen has become synonymous with skincare, and it's more preventative than just corrective. With Indian summers being so unbearable, SPF is not optional anymore, and for good!

Today, everyone has sunscreen in their handbags, in vanity pouches, gym bags, and airport carry-ons, among other things. And honestly, even though we are all dealing with SPF fatigue, it just makes sense somehow, because it is the need of the hour. And as dermatologists now strongly agree, sunscreen is not just another skincare product; it's the foundation of skincare itself.

SPF is now a daily essential and not just a beach product

"There has been a massive paradigm shift in my clinic," says Dr Chandni Jain Gupta ( MBBS, MD, Elantis Aesthetics, New Delhi) . "Sunscreen has transitioned from a 'beach-only' lotion to a fundamental step in daily health."

And obviously, this shift is not something that happened overnight. For years, we've associated sunscreens with formulas that just don't work and a white cast that looks ugly. Nobody wanted that for everyday use, so with skincare, sunscreen evolved too.

"The awareness has skyrocketed, and sunscreen is no longer viewed as an optional cosmetic accessory, but as a preventative medical baseline," says Dr Shivangi Singh (MBBS(KGMU)MD(DVL), SkinBurg Laser Hair & Skin Clinic, Nodia). She added how modern formulations have changed everything. "People used to skip SPF because old-school pharmacy creams left a thick, suffocating white cast. Today's silicone-based gels and invisible fluid textures sit beautifully under makeup and survive our intense sweating and humidity."

And now, thanks to the SPF culture that's truly everywhere, sunscreen doesn't feel like a punishment anymore.

Indians are now very aware of pigmentations

Hyperpigmentation continues to be one of the biggest beauty concerns among Indian users, which is why the conversations around sunscreen are impossible to ignore.

"In India, the primary concerns we treat daily are melasma, stubborn dark spots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation," says Dr Chandni. "Indian skin naturally falls into Fitzpatrick types III to V, meaning it has a higher baseline melanin. While this provides a bit of safety against severe sunburns, our skin is incredibly reactive to ultraviolet radiation."

Interestingly, that's also one reason why people understand that tanning isn't harmless anymore. Dr Shivangi explains, "Tanning isn't just a temporary change in colour; it's a distress signal from the skin attempting to shield cell nuclei from DNA mutation."

After years of associating sunscreen conversations with fairness and warnings about tanning, people now understand that sun exposure can have several effects and therefore, SPF isn't vanity anymore, it's maintenance.

The younger generations are treating SPF like a habit

It's interesting to note how sunscreen users are getting younger, too. "A few years ago, patients only asked about sunscreen once they noticed lines or dark spots in their late twenties or thirties," says Dr Chandni. "Today, teenagers and college students are coming in already well-versed in broad-spectrum protection. Gen Z and young millennials now treat sun protection as a foundational lifestyle habit rather than a corrective measure after the damage is done."

And honestly, that only makes sense, given how the beauty scene is right now, because everyone wants to take care now, instead of having to fix things later.

Sunscreen might still be the best anti-ageing product ever

Well, everything else can come and go, and there could be all the beauty treatments in the world, but one thing all dermatologists agree on is that sunscreen is the most powerful anti-ageing product out there.

"Sunscreen is quite literally the most powerful anti-ageing product available-far more effective than retinol or any luxury night cream," says Dr Chandni. "When skin is routinely left unprotected, UV radiation triggers the overproduction of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes that aggressively break down collagen," explains Dr Shivangi. "Over time, this leads to a complete loss of skin elasticity, resulting in premature lines, thinning skin, and visible broken capillaries."

By using sunscreen every day, you help your skin have the ability to make sure it repairs itself instead of having to spend time surviving the heat (without sunscreen). All in all, your sunscreen doesn't have to be perfect; it just needs to become a habit.

"The best sunscreen is the one you actually enjoy wearing consistently," says Dr Shivangi.
