Anthropic Opens First India Office In Bengaluru

Anthropic Opens First India Office In Bengaluru

Inc42 3 months ago

Amid its bid to double down on its India presence, US-based AI giant Anthropic has inaugurated its first office in the country in Bengaluru.

The company said India is now the second-largest market for its AI assistant Claude, with nearly 50% of local usage driven by computer and mathematical tasks related to application development and software deployment.

Additionally, Anthropic said that educational and instructional tasks make up 12% of Claude's use in India, including by non-profit organisations Pratham and Central Square Foundation. Overall, Claude is being deployed in critical sectors like judiciary, agriculture and healthcare, especially for underserved communities.

"India represents one of the world's most promising opportunities to bring the benefits of responsible AI to vastly more people and enterprises. Already, it's home to extraordinary technical talent, digital infrastructure at scale, and a proven track record of using technology to improve people's lives," Anthropic India's managing director Irina Ghose said.

Ghose, who earlier served as Microsoft India's managing director, has been tasked with leading the Bengaluru office, which is the company's second in Asia apart from the one in Tokyo. The company is also shoring up hiring for the office, in roles including sales, management and development.

The company also announced a host of partnerships across enterprise, education and agriculture sectors in India, as its run rate revenue in the country doubled since expansion plans were first announced in October 2025.

To support its India plans further, Anthropic is also planning to offer applied AI expertise to B2B clients. This, the company said, will help Indian businesses to utilise Claude-powered solutions for business operations.

Anthropic has seen significant traction for its products in India, especially Claude, which is being leveraged by enterprise and startup customers alike. Some of its Indian clients include Air India, CRED and RazorPay, along with AI-native startups like Enterpret and Emergent.

The development coincided with the commencement of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, serving as one of the first major AI forums in the global south. The five-day event is bringing together heads of state, policymakers, global tech CEOs, researchers and civil society to discuss AI's development.

At the heart of the ongoing buzz around India AI is the massive growth opportunity that the country’s market presents to this nascent tech. As per Inc42’s Bharat AI Startups Report, 2026, India’s AI market will hit $126 Bn by 2030, driven by a 5.3x expansion, with a $1.7 Tn GDP impact by 2035.

The 2026-2027 period is a high-leverage window for AI startups focusing on enterprise AI and application-layer solutions to solve “Bharat-scale” problems, aiming to move from pilot to deployment.
