The company made the announcement at the 'India AI Impact Summit 2026' in New Delhi, where it also launched a new initiative called 'OpenAI for India'. The new offices will add to its existing presence in New Delhi and are aimed at working closely with local partners and customers.

OpenAI said India now has more than 10 Cr weekly ChatGPT users, including students, developers and businesses.

The company also announced a strategic partnership with the Tata Group. As part of this, OpenAI will use data centre capacity built by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to run its models locally, starting with 100 MW of capacity with potential to scale to 1 GW over time. The partnership is part of its 'Stargate' initiative, under which the company is eyeing to invest $500 Bn to build AI infrastructure.

OpenAI said it is also expanding its certification programmes in India, with TCS becoming the first participating organisation outside the US.

In addition, the company will provide over 1 Lakh ChatGPT Edu licences to educational institutions. It has partnered with a group of leading Indian institutions to roll out ChatGPT Edu and structured AI training across campuses.

The first cohort includes the following institutions:

  • Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi
  • Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad
  • All India Institute of Medical Sciences
  • Manipal Academy of Higher Education
  • University of Petroleum and Energy Studies
  • Pearl Academy

OpenAI said the focus will be on embedding AI into teaching, research and campus operations. This includes secure ChatGPT Edu access, structured onboarding, discipline-specific guidance and responsible-use frameworks aligned with institutional policies.

AI tools will be integrated into core academic workflows such as coding, simulations, analytics, case analysis and research support. OpenAI will also run hackathons, build days and industry connect programmes to link campus projects with startups and enterprises.

In a separate announcement, OpenAI said it has partnered with JioHotstar to provide an in-stream commerce feature that seamlessly links content discovery to shopping within the viewing experience.

The company also announced a partnership with fintech major Pine Labs to introduce agentic commerce on the latter's existing infrastructure.
