Data Centers: Data Centers Become New Targets in US-Iran Conflict; Threat to Digital Infrastructure Intensifies..

Throughout history, during times of war, tactics such as poisoning water sources, burning bridges, or attacking infrastructure like railways and airports have been employed to undermine an enemy's strength.

However, in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, data centers have emerged as a new target.

According to reports, three Amazon data centers located in the UAE and Bahrain have been affected by drone attacks. Meanwhile, operations conducted by Israel and the United States have targeted at least two data centers in Tehran, one of which is reportedly linked to Iran's military (the IRGC).

Why Attacks on Data Centers Are Dangerous
An attack on a data center can severely disrupt a country's digital and economic activities. Even if a data center goes offline for just a few minutes, it can bring operations at banks, government offices, and industries to a standstill, potentially costing companies millions of dollars in losses.

In modern military technology, the utilization of cloud computing and artificial intelligence has expanded rapidly. These technologies are employed for surveillance, drone navigation, and the analysis of satellite data. Consequently, data centers are no longer viewed merely as commercial infrastructure but are now regarded as strategic assets.

Rapid Growth of Data Centers in the Gulf
Over the past few years, numerous U.S. technology companies have established data centers in the Gulf region. The availability of affordable energy and ample land has made this region an attractive hub for cloud services.

According to the research firm DC Byte, approximately 230 data centers have either been completed or are currently under construction across six Arab nations in the Gulf region. Of these, only a few are wholly owned by U.S. companies-and three of those are precisely the facilities that were subjected to the recent attacks.
