Government Statement on Fertilizer Shortage: Stock Ready for the Kharif Season

Impact of Middle East Conflict on Fertilizers: Amidst the ongoing war and tensions in the Middle East, a piece of reassuring news has emerged for Indian farmers.

Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers, J.P. Nadda, held a high-level meeting with the Agriculture Ministers and Chief Ministers of various states. The government has clarified that, despite disruptions to global supply chains, India currently holds a sufficient stock of fertilizers and seeds.

Is There Enough Fertilizer for the Kharif Season?

According to a report by ANI-citing data released by the government-the requirement for fertilizers for the upcoming Kharif season stands at 390.52 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT). The reassuring aspect is that approximately 46 percent of this requirement-specifically 180 LMT-is already available within the country as 'opening stock.' The Ministry of Agriculture has provided assurances that farmers will not face any shortages whatsoever during the sowing period.

What is the Status Regarding Seed Availability?

In addition to fertilizers, the government has also clarified the situation regarding seeds. According to Additional Secretary Maninder Kaur Dwivedi, the requirement for seeds this season is 166.46 Lakh Quintals; however, we currently possess a surplus of 19.29 Lakh Quintals. This implies that there will be no shortage of seeds.

What Will Be the Impact of Middle East Tensions on India?

India relies on foreign sources to meet its fertilizer requirements. Specifically, 20% of its Urea and one-third of its complex fertilizers (such as DAP) are imported from abroad. During the first nine months of the 2026 fiscal year, the Middle East alone accounted for 40% of India's total fertilizer imports. Experts believe that this strain could impact domestic production by 10-15%; however, the government's proactive preparations have mitigated this risk.

What is the breakdown regarding Urea and DAP?

In India, Urea alone accounts for 45% of the total fertilizer consumption. Additionally, fertilizers such as DAP and NPK constitute approximately one-third of the total share. Furthermore, 80% of the natural gas utilized in the production of Urea is imported. In light of these challenges, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and J.P. Nadda met in Parliament to review the situation, ensuring that there are no disruptions in the supply of fertilizers to the states.
