Professional networking platform LinkedIn has announced several key changes aimed at making its news feed more relevant and trustworthy.
As part of these updates, the company is implementing an AI-based feed ranking system and will also be cracking down on fake engagement and automated comments on the platform. The company states that the objective behind these changes is to present users with content that is pertinent to their professional lives and interests, rather than content created solely to artificially boost likes and comments.
AI to Determine Which Posts Users See
LinkedIn is now leveraging Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) to further enhance its feed algorithm. With the aid of this technology, the platform will attempt to discern the true subject matter of a post and identify which users are likely to be interested in it. This AI system will curate the feed by analyzing various signals, such as information provided in the user's profile, their industry, professional experience, skills, and location.
Identifying the Types of Posts Users Respond To
Based on all these data points, the feed will gradually adapt itself to align with the user's evolving interests.
Action Against Fake and Automated Comments
LinkedIn has also adopted a strict stance against the proliferation of automated engagement tools on its platform. There are various tools designed to automatically generate comments, thereby artificially boosting a post's reach. According to the company, such tools violate the platform's rules because they compromise the authenticity of conversations. Consequently, LinkedIn is now strengthening its systems to detect and prevent such behavior.
Posts Designed Solely to Boost Engagement Will Appear Less Frequently
LinkedIn has also clarified that, going forward, it will reduce the visibility of posts created with the sole intention of driving up engagement.
Examples include:
Posts that solicit specific comments-such as "Type 'Yes' if you agree."
Unrelated videos are added merely to increase a post's reach.
Posts that repeatedly share the same type of opinion or idea. Instead, the platform will prioritize posts containing content such as industry-related information, career advice, professional experiences, and useful workplace-related discussions.
A New Feature for New Users
LinkedIn is also testing a new feature designed to enhance the experience for new users. Typically, the platform curates a user's feed based on their past activities and profile data; however, new users initially possess limited information of this kind. To address this issue, a feature called the "Interest Picker" is being piloted during the sign-up process. This allows users to select topics of their choice-such as leadership, job search skills, career growth, and industry trends-ensuring that they are shown more relevant content right from the start.
Why These Changes Are Necessary
Content creation on LinkedIn has grown rapidly over the past few years. However, alongside this growth, there has also been a rise in posts and automation tools designed solely to boost engagement. Through a new AI-based system, LinkedIn is striving to re-establish the platform as a dedicated space for professional discourse and knowledge sharing.
