InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of India's largest airline IndiGo, has appointed William Walsh as its new CEO, subject to regulatory approvals.
The move follows the resignation of Pieter Elbers last month, after the airline faced a major operational crisis in December last year that disrupted its domestic schedule and left large numbers of passengers stranded across its network.
Elbers stepped down on 10 March with immediate effect. In the interim, IndiGo's founder and Managing Director Rahul Bhatia has been serving as the interim CEO.
Walsh, who is currently Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), is will take the role by 3 August 2026, after his tenure at the industry body ends on 31 July.
Walsh, widely known as Willie, has held several senior roles in global aviation. He previously served as CEO of British Airways and later led International Airlines Group, which owns airlines including Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level and Vueling.
Welcoming the appointment, IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said, 'I am thrilled that Willie will be at helm of IndiGo. He is an exceptional global aviation leader with a stellar track record of outstanding leadership across several airlines. His experience in managing large scale airline operations and navigating complex market dynamics make him ideally suited to strengthen and lead IndiGo for continued growth in an ever evolving and competitive international aviation environment.'
Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo added, 'As we enter a new phase of transformation and growth, I am delighted to welcome Willie to IndiGo. He is an iconic and accomplished aviation leader and brings a rare combination of global perspective, operational expertise of having built strong customer-focused airlines, deep industry experience and a values driven leadership, making him exceptionally suited to lead IndiGo at this pivotal cusp of growth.'

Walsh is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern aviation, known for leading complex restructurings as well as mergers and acquisitions.
He began his career as a pilot before moving into leadership roles, including COO and then CEO of Aer Lingus between 2000 and 2005. He went on to serve as CEO of British Airways from 2005 to 2011, and later led International Airlines Group from 2011 to 2020. He has been Director General of IATA since then.
