She conveyed her views in a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the Special Session of Parliament.

Patil, who served as the 12th President of India from 2007 to 2012 and was the first woman to hold the constitutional post, said the reform represents a landmark constitutional amendment aimed at advancing gender equality and inclusive governance. She noted that ensuring greater participation of women in Parliament and State Assemblies would significantly enrich legislative debates and contribute to more balanced policy outcomes.

In her letter, the former President emphasised that women's empowerment can be fully realised only when they are given equal opportunities to participate in decision-making processes at the highest levels of governance. She described the legislation not merely as a legal provision but as a strong affirmation of India's commitment to inclusive democracy and social justice.

Patil also highlighted the broader societal impact of the reform, stating that increased representation of women in public life would inspire future generations, particularly those from rural and marginalised communities, to take up leadership roles. She said the initiative would help bridge long-standing historical inequalities and promote a more equitable society.

The former President commended all stakeholders involved in advancing the legislation, saying it reflects years of sustained effort to achieve women's reservation in elected bodies. She added that the implementation of the law would send a strong global message about India's commitment to gender justice and inclusive development.

Her endorsement comes just ahead of the Special Session of Parliament beginning April 16, during which amendments related to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam and a proposed delimitation exercise are expected to be discussed. The development also comes amid political debate over the timing of the legislation, with differing views emerging across party lines.
