If your social media feed is full of dreamy Northern Lights videos from Iceland, Norway or Alaska, here's something you probably didn't expect: scientists say a powerful solar storm heading toward Earth could create conditions that may allow faint auroras to become visible from parts of northern India.
While there are no guarantees, experts say parts of northern India may have a chance of witnessing the phenomenon if the storm strengthens and magnetic conditions align.
X |5 Indian Locations That Could Witness a Rare Aurora Display This Week Why is everyone talking about this solar storm?
Before you start planning an impromptu aurora road trip, here's a quick breakdown of what makes this event special.- The sun just fired a massive plasma cloud toward earth: The eruption came from Active Region 4461, one of the Sun's most active regions in recent weeks. Scientists observed a dense filament of solar plasma being launched into space at roughly 1400 kilometres per second.
- It could trigger a strong geomagnetic storm: When this solar material reaches Earth, it can interact with our planet's field and create a geomagnetic storm. The current forecast is for a G3-level storm, which is considered strong enough to potentially affect satellite communications, GPS signals, power systems, and radio communications in some regions.
- Auroras could travel further south than normal: Normally, Auroras stay close to the Arctic and Antarctic regions. During stronger geomagnetic storms, however, the auroral zone expands toward lower latitudes, and that's why scientists are paying attention to whether this event could make auroras visible in places that rarely see them.
- One important detail is still unknown: Scientists still don't know the exact orientation of the magnetic field inside the incoming solar cloud. A factor known as the Bz component will determine how strongly the storm interacts with Earth's magnetic field. This information can only be measured when the cloud reaches monitoring satellites positioned about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth.
