Fake Asa is finally revealed to be Kiri
The episode finally puts a name to the girl who spent years living beside Yuru as his sister. Fake Asa is actually Kiri, one half of the Zashiki Warashi, while Danji is the other half of the Tsugai pair. Their ability to manipulate shadows and change their appearance allowed Kiri to take Asa's form and remain close to Yuru without him knowing who she really was.
This also changes how Yuru can look at Danji. His childhood friend was not simply another villager helping with a cruel deception. Kyoka had secretly told Danji to watch over Yuru and protect him, even while Kiri was being used to keep Yuru tied to Higashi Village. Kyoka's painful history comes to light
Episode 21 goes back roughly 400 years to explain how Danji and Kiri became connected to Higashi Village. The pair had been sealed away by their former master during a war and were eventually found by Roei Tadera, who brought them to the village.Kyoka was going through her own tragedy at the time. She had lost her husband and two children in a landslide, leaving her devastated, and the Zashiki Warashi became part of her life after Roei brought them to her. Kyoka formed a contract with them and came to treat Danji and Kiri like her own children.
Kyoka later began working under Yamaha, the elder of Higashi Village. She cared about Yuru and did not see him simply as a tool for the village, but she still had to follow Yamaha's orders. That becomes crucial after Mine and Nagisa escape the village with Asa.
Why Kiri had to become Fake Asa
After Mine and Nagisa left Higashi Village with Asa, Yamaha wanted Yuru to remain behind. Kyoka was therefore ordered to have Kiri take Asa's appearance and continue living with Yuru as his sister. Kiri was carrying out a role decided by the adults around her rather than choosing the deception for herself.Kyoka did, however, try to protect Yuru in her own way. While Kiri maintained the Fake Asa identity, Kyoka secretly instructed Danji to stay close to Yuru and protect him. So the lie surrounding Yuru's childhood had a genuine relationship buried inside it, especially when it came to Danji's feelings for his friend.
That gives the Fake Asa mystery a much sadder meaning. Kiri was pretending to be Asa, but the bond she built with Yuru over the years was not necessarily fake. For Yuru, those childhood memories still belong to him, even after learning the truth.
Yuru and Asa face the biggest family mystery
The episode also returns to the question that has haunted the twins. Yuru tells Asa about Ivan's claim that he killed their parents, Mine and Nagisa. The revelation is painful for Asa, especially because the twins have spent so long searching for answers about what happened to them.Yuru, however, refuses to accept Ivan's statement as the final word. They have not discovered the truth themselves, so he does not want them to give up simply because Ivan made the claim. Their conversation also flips the emotional dynamic from earlier episodes, when Asa was the one encouraging Yuru to believe that their parents could still be alive.
The twins ultimately decide to keep searching. Yuru is also left with another important name to investigate, Roei Tadera, whose connection to the Zashiki Warashi and the history of Mine and Nagisa could reveal more about what happened to their family.
