The Delhi government has announced that applications for new ration cards will be accepted through a digital e-portal starting May 15. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the new system is designed to make the application process fully online and more transparent for residents.
According to the announcement, applicants will be able to complete the entire process digitally without visiting multiple government offices. People who may not have access to personal internet facilities can also apply through nearby service centers, where assistance will be available for online submissions.
The move is part of a broader push toward digitisation of public services in the national capital. Officials say the online process is expected to reduce paperwork, minimize delays, and improve tracking of applications. The government also stated that digitised systems could help reduce errors and increase accountability in the distribution process.

The ration card system plays a key role in providing subsidised food grains and essential commodities to eligible households under the public distribution system. In recent years, several states have shifted toward online systems to streamline welfare delivery and reduce dependence on manual verification processes.
While the government has highlighted transparency and convenience as the primary goals of the initiative, the effectiveness of the system will depend on implementation, accessibility, and technical support for users unfamiliar with digital platforms. Residents are expected to receive further details regarding eligibility, required documents, and application procedures closer to the launch date.
