Street vendors have emerged as important contributors to India's urban economy, with the PM SVANidhi scheme providing financial support aimed at strengthening small businesses and promoting self-reliance among informal workers.
Highlighting the programme's impact, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the scheme has enabled vendors to access collateral-free loans, helping them expand their businesses and improve their livelihoods. The initiative was launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The scheme benefits vendors engaged in activities such as selling vegetables, fruits, tea, and other everyday goods. Officials say it has also encouraged greater adoption of digital transactions, helping beneficiaries become part of the broader digital economy while improving access to formal financial services.
According to the Delhi government, large numbers of street vendors in the capital have received assistance under the programme over the past six years. The support is aimed at enhancing income opportunities, promoting financial inclusion, and strengthening the economic security of self-employed workers across the city.
