What is Luanne James?

Luanne James, who became director of the Rutherford County Library System in July 2025, brings over 25 years of experience in public library leadership, including roles in Texas and South Carolina.

Known for her expertise in public administration and grant writing, James previously worked at the York County Public Library System. Her termination in March followed a dispute with the Rutherford County Library Board, after she refused to move 100 LGBTQ+ books from the children's section to the adult section.

In a letter written prior to her termination, Luanne James outlined her reasons for refusing to follow the directive, explaining her position on the matter and it reads, "Restricting access to these materials through subjective relocation or removal constitutes a violation of the community's right to information and a direct infringement on the principles of free speech."

"Our libraries are funded by and for the citizens; therefore, the right to access information - free from government interference - is a protected hallmark of our democracy," added James.

Luanne James cites ethics and constitutional rights in refusal

According to PrimerTimer, Luanne James emphasised that her responsibility to safeguard public access is not a personal belief but a fundamental principle of the American Library Association's code of ethics.

She characterised the board's directive as "government-mandated viewpoint discrimination" and stated it was her professional duty to resist it, citing violations of both her First Amendment rights and those of Rutherford County residents.

GoFundMe campaign surges in support of Luanne James

LuLuanne James voiced her disappointment after being dismissed by the Rutherford County Library Board on Monday, March 31, following an 8-3 vote. She had consistently refused to move over 100 LGBTQ+ books, standing by her principles.
