In a major development, Joseph Savarino, the grandson of former college basketball icon Mike Krzyzewski, has been arrested and charged with misdemeanour driving while impaired (DWI) in connection with a fatal crash that claimed the life of a 15-year-old on Saturday, April 18, 2026. The case has drawn significant public attention, not only because of the tragic loss of life but also due to Savarino's ties to a prominent sports family.
Who is Michael Savarino?
Michael Savarino is another grandson of legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski, who had previously faced legal trouble following a DWI-related arrest in November 2021. He was pulled over by the North Carolina Highway Patrol in Orange County for a stop sign violation while driving a white 2017 Jeep SUV registered to his then teammate Paolo Banchero, who was also in the vehicle and subsequently charged with aiding and abetting DWI.Savarino, the son of Krzyzewski's eldest daughter Debbie, was at the time a member of the Duke Blue Devils men's basketball team, having joined the programme as a walk-on during the 2019-2020 season under his grandfather's leadership, reports PrimeTimer.
Michael Savarino joined the Duke Blue Devils men's basketball team as a freshman walk-on in 2019 but saw limited action during his early years, spending most of his time on the beach. He did not feature in any games during the 2019-20 season and appeared in just two games, averaging 1.1 points, coming off the bench in each appearance without making a single start.
The incident had drawn attention due to both his family background and his association with one of college basketball's most prominent programmes.

After joining the Duke Blue Devils men's basketball team as a freshman walk-on, Michael Savarino recalled a formative childhood moment with his grandfather, Mike Krzyzewski, when he and his brother were told the opportunity to join the programme would always be open to them. While Savarino has said that conversation stayed with him over the years, Krzyzewski later emphasised that his grandson's place on the team was earned, not given, stressing that Michael met the same standards and expectations as any other player in the highly competitive programme.
"He'd be a pretty good Division II player, but he wanted to come to Duke if he could get in. He knows the lay of the land."
Mike Krzyzewski also noted that his grandson made a meaningful contribution to the team and was well embraced by his teammates.
