JAMMU: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences Jammu has achieved a major milestone in cancer care, with its Department of Radiation Oncology successfully performing the first-ever bilateral breast interstitial brachytherapy procedure in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

The advanced procedure was carried out on a female patient diagnosed with synchronous bilateral breast cancer, following breast-conserving surgeries and completion of adjuvant chemotherapy. The technique enabled precise radiation delivery to both tumor beds while preserving surrounding healthy tissue and maintaining cosmetic outcomes.

This marks a significant step in the institute's focus on precision oncology and organ preservation, as interstitial brachytherapy allows highly targeted radiation with reduced toxicity.

The procedure was performed under the guidance of Dr. D. N. Sharma, along with a team led by Dr. Shabab Lalit Angurana and Dr. Girija Priya Sharma. The anaesthesia team was headed by Dr. Raksha Kundal, with support from medical physicists.

Officials said the successful implementation of this technically complex procedure reflects the growing capabilities of AIIMS Jammu in delivering advanced, patient-centric cancer treatment.

The achievement is expected to enhance access to high-quality oncology services within the region, reducing the need for patients to travel outside Jammu and Kashmir for specialised care.
