NEW DELHI: Indian Railways on Monday announced that Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) holding a valid Unique Disability ID (UDID) card will now be permitted to travel in unreserved coaches earmarked for Divyangjan in Mail and Express trains.
According to the official statement, PwDs with a valid UDID card, along with passengers eligible for concessional fares, will be treated as bona fide passengers. They will be allowed to travel in designated compartments such as SLRD and LSLRD (Luggage-cum-Brake Van) coaches, provided they possess valid travel authority.
The Railways clarified that strict action will be taken under the provisions of the Railway Act, 1989 against unauthorized passengers found occupying these reserved spaces. The move aims to ensure that the intended beneficiaries can access these facilities without inconvenience.
All Zonal Railways have been directed to issue necessary instructions to ensure proper implementation of the new provisions across the network.
The Divyangjan Card, also known as the E-Ticketing Photo Identity Card (EPICS), is issued to Persons with Disabilities to enable them to avail travel concessions. It is granted based on a valid disability or concession certificate, with UDID cards accepted for certain categories. Applications and renewals can be processed through the Railways' Divyangjan portal or the Central Government services portal.
In a separate development, Indian Railways reported strong performance in scrap disposal for the financial year 2025-26. Against a target of Rs 6000 crore, the organisation achieved scrap sales worth Rs 6813.86 crore, surpassing expectations.
This follows a similarly strong performance in 2024-25, when Railways exceeded its Rs 5400 crore target by recording scrap sales of Rs 6641.78 crore.
Officials stated that the continued success in scrap monetisation reflects a focused approach toward efficient asset management and transparent disposal practices, helping free up valuable space across depots, yards, and workshops while unlocking value from unserviceable materials.
