CHANDIGARH: In a landmark achievement, the Department of Dermatology, Venereology & Leprology at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research has been ranked 1st in Asia and 19th globally in Dermatology by EduRank in its 2026 rankings, the institute announced on Wednesday.

According to PGIMER, the department has retained its No. 1 position in Asia for three consecutive years - 2024, 2025, and 2026, while maintaining a strong global standing.

Expressing his satisfaction, Prof. Vivek Lal said the recognition reflects the institute's commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and patient-centric care. He noted that being ranked among the top globally highlights the impact of PGIMER's high-quality scientific research and congratulated the department for achieving the milestone.

The rankings are based on an extensive analysis of 5.26 million citations across 329,000 academic publications from 806 universities in Asia, underscoring the scale and competitiveness of the evaluation.

PGIMER stated that institutions ranked above it globally include leading US centres such as Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Mayo Clinic, and Stanford University, along with prominent European institutions like University College London and Charité, placing PGIMER among an elite global league.

Sharing his perspective, Prof. Sanjeev Handa said the continued recognition reflects the department's dedication, teamwork, and academic rigour. He highlighted that despite handling an average daily outpatient load of nearly 450 patients, the department has consistently delivered impactful research while maintaining high standards in clinical care and education.

Prof. Handa credited the achievement to the collective efforts of faculty members, including Dr. Davinder Parsad, Dr. Sunil Dogra, Dr. Dipankar De, Dr. Sendhil Kumaran, Dr. Tarun Narang, Dr. Rahul Mahajan, Dr. Vinay Keshavmurthy, and Dr. Vinod Sharma, along with senior residents, whom he described as the backbone of the department.
